CMS Delays PECOS Edit, Cites “Technical Issues”

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced today that home health claims that list an attending physician without a PECOS enrollment record will not be denied for the time being, reports Decision Health (DH).

The announcement from CMS arrived via an email message to Medicare providers April 25.

CMS had planned to implement an edit to deny such claims for services provided on or after May 1, according to DH, but due to “technical issues,” the agency is temporarily delaying the edit.

“CMS will advise you of the new implementation date in the near future,” according to the agency’s email message.

CMS has delayed the edits several times in the past, with previous dates set for July 2010, January 2011 and July 2011.

CMS had not returned a comment as of press time.
