CMS Pledges $100 Million to Streamline State Medicaid Programs

In an effort to improve patient care and reduce costs, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has launched a $100 million initiative to provide federal tools and resources to state Medicaid programs.

The Medicaid Innovation Accelerator Program (IAP), developed with input from the National Governors Association, is CMS’ latest effort to support payment and delivery system reform.

“Through the Medicaid Innovation Accelerator Program, [the Department of Health and Human Services] is investing over $100 million in technical support to help states in their efforts to improve health, improve care and decrease costs for their Medicaid beneficiaries,” the agency said.

The new program’s federal expertise will provide Medicaid-specific resources and technical assistance to support states’ health care reform efforts. It will identify and advance new models of care delivery and payment; provide data analytics; improve quality measurement; and distribute Medicaid lessons and best practices.

Focusing on these areas, CMS hopes to “jumpstart innovation” while supporting states in their efforts to improve health care and lower costs.
