Tech Startup Eyes Untapped Opportunity in Home Health

A new technology startup is building a support platform that could disrupt the way families, health professionals and others access home healthcare services.

CareZapp, in beta, has three main components: a private social network where caregivers and professionals can communicate and collaborate; a framework for applications that can assist with home care; and a network that assists users with finding local services providers, writes TechCrunch in a recent article

“With digital health, the Internet of Things, and civil society, there’s a new opportunity for us to deliver a better way of caring for people at home,” Co-founder and CEO Andrew Macfarlane tells TechCrunch. “[There are] three things you need in order to be able to be able to care for somebody well — community, environment, and technology.”

To bring the CareZapp to market, the company will partner with health care and service providers, initially in the United States and Ireland. The company is announcing a partnership with Irish home care company myhomecare.ie.

The basic communication tools will be free — CareZapp will make money by charging for apps, and by charging service providers to be listed in the discovery network.

During CareZapp’s pilots, the company was able to maintain eight out of 10 participants outside the hospital it worked with, which “leads to big savings, Macfarlane told judges at the recent Startup Battlefield at Disrupt Europe event.

Users can learn about the company from care and support organizations, as well as through family and friends, he says.
