The number of home health agencies increased to almost 11,654 in 2010, with the biggest increase coming from for-profit agencies says MedPAC’s annual report to Congress.
It’s the highest amount on record, breaking the previous high in the 1990s when it exceeded 10,900 agencies.
The high rate of growth is a particular concern because the new agencies appear to be concentrated in areas where fraud is a concern: California,Texas, and Florida.
These states, like most, do not have state certificate-of-need laws for home health care, which can limit the entry of new providers.
