CMS Warns Beneficiaries of DME Provider Change

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began sending emails last week to notify patients of the impending Round 2 of its Competitive Bidding program.

CMS also sent emails to providers of home medical equipment (HME), notifying them that the agency would also be reaching out to patients, HME Business reports.

The messages describe the bidding program and what categories of HME it affects, also discussing that the beneficiary might have a different contracted supplier than before as a result of Round 2.

“When the program starts, people with Original Medicare who live in or travel to one of these areas and need items listed below will likely need to get these items from contract suppliers if they want Medicare to help pay, unless their current suppliers decide to become grandfathered suppliers,” according to HME Business’ description of the CMS message.

The email then direct beneficiaries to go to Medicare’s online supplier search, or call 1-800-MEDICARE to find out which providers will be their newly contracted suppliers.
